What We Believe

What We Believe

• In those beliefs which are essential to our faith, we seek unity.
• In those beliefs which are not essential to our faith, we grant liberty.
• In all beliefs, we practice charity.

These are our essential beliefs:

1. The Bible is inerrant and authoritative.

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.” (2 Timothy 3:16 NIV)

The Bible is different from any other book. Although it was written by human authors, it was inspired by God’s Holy Spirit. Every word of the Bible is true. The Bible is a stable rock in an ever-changing storm-tossed world. Without it, we could not discern truth from falsehood.

At BLBC, we believe the Bible is the Word of God. When our own opinions disagree with the Bible, we know that our opinions must be mistaken, because the Bible is always right. We will not compromise on this point. All the rest of our beliefs are derived from this one.

We do not endorse any particular translation of the Bible.

2. God is triune.

“May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.” (1 Corinthians 13:14 NIV)

God always was, is, and will be three Persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. These are not different aspects or personalities of God, but separately-existing co-equal Persons. However, they are not three Gods, but one. This truth is a mystery for us, whose understanding is inadequate to grasp it.

3. Jesus of Nazareth is fully human and fully divine.

“I and the Father are one.” (John 10:30 NIV)

Jesus Christ is 100% God and 100% human. He was born of a virgin, lived on this Earth for over 30 years, suffered temptations and humiliations, died on a Roman cross, was buried, and was raised to life again—proving that He was the Messiah and God’s Son.

4. God is in perfect control of the universe.

“The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the LORD.” (Proverbs 16:33 NIV)

God superintends everything. Nothing happens outside His control. Not one subatomic particle moves without His authorization.

Human beings have free will. We are responsible for our own actions. But God knew what we would choose before He created us. Therefore, He is in control even of our free choices.

5. Heaven and hell are real.

“In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you.” (John 14:2 NIV)

“You snakes! You brood of vipers! How will you escape being condemned to hell?” (Matthew 23:33 NIV)

What the Bible teaches about the afterlife is fact—not allegory, parable, or fable. There is a place of eternal reward, where sinners who repent of their sins and entrust their earthly lives to Jesus Christ will live with Him forever. There is also a place of eternal punishment, reserved for the great majority of people—sinners who do not repent and who fail to trust Jesus.

6. The only way to eternal life is Jesus.

“Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’” (John 14:6 NIV)

“Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12 NIV)

The central message of the Christian faith is that Jesus alone saves. The Bible says that we are desperate without Jesus. He is our only hope for salvation. If there were some other way to be saved, Jesus’ crucifixion would not have been necessary.

Salvation is not based on our sincerity, or our attempts to live a morally decent life. One can be sincerely wrong. Many sincere people are headed for hell. The only way to be saved is by trusting in Jesus.

7. Every believer has direct access to God.

“You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God.” (1 Peter 2:9 NIV)

Every person who receives Jesus becomes a child of God. They can go to their heavenly Father on their own—without an intermediary. Pastors and priests are important for spiritual instruction and guidance, but we do not have to go through them to get to God.

8. God’s Holy Spirit lives inside every believer.

“If anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ.” (Romans 8:9 NIV)

The Holy Spirit is God’s gift to every person who entrusts his or her life to Jesus. He gives strength, wisdom, assurance, and guidance to the believer.

9. Every Christian should be baptized by immersion after he or she believes.

“As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water.” (Matthew 3:16 NIV)

The reason we are called “Baptists” is because of the peculiar practice of baptizing individuals after they have come to know Jesus Christ. Since a minimum level of understanding is necessary for a person to make that decision, we do not practice infant baptism.

We choose to baptize by immersing people completely under water. This is the way Jesus was baptized, and it is the way the early church practiced baptism.

Baptism is not a requirement for salvation, but it is a sign of obedience that demonstrates a person’s repentance.

Every member of Bounty Land Baptist Church must be baptized by immersion, after trusting in the Lord Jesus Christ.

10. Telling the world about Jesus is the purpose of the church.

“Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” (Matthew 28:19-20 NIV)

Jesus instituted the church to be a missionary organization. We are charged with telling those in our community and around the world how Jesus can save them. This is the reason we exist.
